Dog Boarding in Boston: What Cage-Free Luxury Actually Means
When most pet parents picture dog boarding in Boston, they think of long rows of metal kennels, fluorescent lights, and the constant background bark of stressed dogs. That is the model Pawmenities was built to replace. Our overnight boarding takes place inside an actual home — a waterfront residence in Boston Seaport and a private setting on the North Shore — where dogs sleep on couches, lounge on rugs, and follow our overnight team from room to room instead of sitting alone in a cage.
Cage-free is not the marketing label we hide behind; it is the operating model. Every dog accepted into boarding passes a temperament evaluation first, which lets us run small, well-matched play groups instead of warehousing strangers together. That single decision changes everything downstream: lower cortisol, better sleep, fewer altercations, and dogs who actually want to come back. It is also why we cap our overnight count rather than scaling to fill every square foot — sustainable enrichment requires breathing room.
What a Boarding Stay Looks Like
A typical stay starts with a calm intake. We confirm vaccinations, review feeding instructions, and let your dog explore the space at their own pace. From there the day flows in predictable blocks — morning play, midday rest, afternoon enrichment, evening wind-down — that mirror the routine most dogs already know at home. Predictability is the single biggest stress reducer for boarded dogs, more important than any premium add-on.
Meals are served individually in quiet spots, never family-style. Medications are administered on schedule and logged. Throughout the day our team sends photo and video updates through the client portal so you can see your dog playing, napping, or chewing on a favorite toy in real time. If your pup needs a quieter room, an extra walk, or a one-on-one cuddle break, that is the default — not an upcharge.
Who Boarding Is (and Isn't) For
Cage-free boarding is ideal for social, well-adjusted adult dogs and confident puppies who do well around other dogs. It works especially well for repeat travelers, holiday boarders, and pet parents juggling unpredictable work schedules. We accept dogs of every size — from a 6-pound Yorkie to a 110-pound Bernese — and run separate playgroups by size, energy, and play style.
Boarding is not the right fit for dogs with active dog-directed aggression, untreated severe separation anxiety, or unmanaged medical conditions that require veterinary supervision. For those cases we usually recommend starting with a daycare trial day, which lets us evaluate temperament without the commitment of an overnight stay. Senior dogs and dogs new to group settings often do best with a half-day visit before their first overnight.
Boarding Pricing, Honestly
Boarding starts at $75 per night for adult dogs 65 pounds and under, $85 for adult XL dogs over 65 pounds, $110 for puppies, and $120 for puppy XL. Holiday weeks carry a $100 surcharge to cover the staffing required to run holiday-level enrichment. Every rate already includes cage-free play, three or more daily walks, individualized feeding, photo updates, and 24/7 on-site human supervision. We do not charge separately for "premium suites" or "extended play" because those are the baseline.
For repeat boarders, ask about our extended-stay rates. For first-time families, we usually suggest pairing one boarding stay with one or two daycare days beforehand so your dog walks in already knowing the team and the space. That single tweak is the difference between a dog who tolerates boarding and a dog who genuinely enjoys it.
Booking Windows for Greater Boston
Boston travel patterns are predictable: marathon weekend, the Cape exodus in July, Thanksgiving, the December holidays, spring break. Those weeks fill 6–10 weeks in advance every year. If you already know your dates, lock them in early — we hold a small number of last-minute spots, but they are not guaranteed. Our team is reachable seven days a week, and most booking questions get answered within an hour.
